Whether you’re looking to sell or you just bought your dream home, having a lavish looking home will surely catch the eye of your guests, or potential buyers. Here are 3 tips that interior designers use everyday to make your home look aesthetic and expensive.
Have a Focal Point
One way to make a space more visually appealing is by creating a focal point. There are many ways you can do this including; a large mirror (Example #3) or art piece, a gallery wall, a vibrant paint colour (Example #2), a fireplace (Example #1), wall paper, shiplap, large plants, etc.

The purpose of a focal point is to draw the eye to the furthest wall in the room, acting as a visual anchor, says The Erica Reddy Team in “Interior Design Tips for Small Spaces”. The focal point also communicates the mood of a room, whether that’s elegant, calming, or cheerful.
Layering
You can layer by having different heights of decor, this can be a vertical item, paired with something smaller, having multiple colours in the room that compliment each other (Example #1), having visual highs and lows (Example #2), such as rugs that add texture, and having different lighting throughout a space, ambient lighting really helps the atmosphere in a room (Example #3).

Layering helps a room feel more dimensional and gives it personality. Layering is a complex design technique, if you’d like to learn more check out this amazing article “Why Designers Always Start, But Never End, With Layering – 10 Ways They Build Depth Into Every Room” by Julia Demer.
Rule of Three
An interior design rule that most designers use is the “Rule of Three”. “The rule of three works for styling a coffee table (Example 1), decorating a mantel (Example #2), arranging furniture in a room (Example #3) and so much more” According to Yvonne Pratt in “Using The Magical Rule Of Three When You Decorate”.

If you’re counting everything in the picture, you can count more than three items. And you would be right, but our eyes only see three, says Yvonne. Designers found that we naturally like the way things look when they are grouped in three, we think things look more visually appealing and harmonious.
Now lets see these rules work together
Example #1
Here we have a focal point with the mirror, we have multiple layering techniques such as; the colours, the height of the decor, the rug, and we have our groups of three with the ottoman, chair, and table, and with the decor on the mantle.
Example #2
Here we have a focal point of the gallery wall, matched with the eye-catching green paint. We have ambient lighting in the corner. We have our groups of three in the table on the left, the coffee table in the middle, and the chair on the right, and with the plant on the left, the couch in the middle and the floor lamp on the right.
Example #3
Here’s another example of a gallery wall using different sizes and placements. We have dimension without having too much colour or decor, and our group of three on the coffee table.
